I adore my Mum, she personifies kindness but her cooking is truly terrible. So we ate a lot of ice creams and fish suppers!
One night I made a curry which was a hit. It had to be curry in a hurry as her house there is a bit gorgeous and she's never used the oven! She's like a Bond girl my Mum. Too glam to scramble, too posh to wash potatoes, she's Ab Fab and I was her Saffy! I never want to change her, we are quite opposite like two blades of a pair of scissors, moving in different directions, but nothing gets between us without getting cut!
I rang her tonight and she got off the phone quickly as she said she was watching Poldark, I'm not sure if this was code for her looking at my stepfather in his smoking jacket or she really was catching up on her Cornish telly viewing after a week of spoiling us all.
I'm really missing her tonight but as we bluster into another week and new month of rain I will dine out on the memory of a week of chips, g&ts, sunshine and the wonderful Coco Chanel infused Grandma Joey.
Curry in a hurry
Fry 4 cloves of garlic in butter and add a pint of king prawns. Add curry paste and a tin of coconut milk , chilli flakes, a bunch of chopped coriander. Add a tbs of sugar, a splash of lime juice and nam play fish sauce. Serve in warm bowls with a toasted pitta and a cold beer. Heaven on earth for me.
